The Osun State Government has declared Wednesday, June 17, 2026, a public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year, Hijira 1448AH.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Rasheed Aderibigbe, in Osogbo.
According to the commissioner, the holiday is to enable Muslims across the state celebrate the commencement of the new Islamic calendar year.
“Osun State Government is pleased to announce that Wednesday, June 17, 2026, will be observed as a public holiday to commemorate Hijira 1448AH. This celebration marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year,” the statement read.

Aderibigbe extended the government’s goodwill to Muslim faithful, praying that the new year would usher in peace, prosperity and unity for the state.
He also urged residents to celebrate peacefully and avoid anything that could threaten harmony and coexistence.
“Residents are encouraged to shun rancour and disharmony and joyfully participate in festivities and celebrations that promote unity and togetherness,” he added.
The Islamic year 1448AH officially began on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, following the sighting of the Muharram crescent moon. The lunar year is expected to run until around June 5, 2027, according to the Gregorian calendar.
