Turkey Edge USA 3-2 as Pochettino Focuses on World Cup Knockout Stage

Turkey ended their World Cup campaign on a high with a dramatic 3-2 victory over the United States on Thursday, but American coach Mauricio Pochettino insisted the defeat would not affect his team's confidence ahead of the knockout rounds.

Already assured of top spot in Group D, the United States rested several key players with one eye on next week's round-of-32 clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Turkey, meanwhile, entered the match already eliminated after defeats to Paraguay and Australia and were determined to finish with pride.

The Americans made a dream start when defender Auston Trusty headed home from a corner in the third minute to score his first international goal.

Turkey responded quickly, ending their goal drought through Arda Güler, who finished brilliantly after a clever attacking move in the 10th minute.

The game became increasingly physical, with tempers flaring on the sidelines after a challenge involving Sebastian Berhalter.

The United States thought they had regained the lead through Mark McKenzie, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Turkey then completed the turnaround in the 31st minute when Barış Alper Yılmaz finished from close range after being set up by teammate Eren Elmalı.

The hosts came out stronger after the break and levelled in the 49th minute as Berhalter fired home after Turkey failed to clear a long throw.

The home crowd welcomed the return of captain Christian Pulisic, who made his first appearance since picking up an injury against Paraguay. The forward looked lively and came close to scoring, with one effort striking the post.

Just as the match appeared headed for a draw, Kaan Ayhan scored deep into stoppage time to hand Turkey a dramatic victory.

Despite the defeat, Pochettino remained calm, explaining that protecting players and preparing for the knockout stage had been his main priority.

"We wanted to win, but we also had other things to consider. Winning this match means nothing if you lose the next one and fail to progress," he said.

The United States will now turn its attention to its last-32 encounter with Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Turkey bows out of the tournament with its first victory.
