The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his comments on the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, insisting that Nigeria needs continuity in its policies rather than a new economic direction.
The APC National Vice Chairman (South-East), Dr Ijeomah Arodiogbu, made the remarks while reacting to Obi’s recent interview on Channels Television, where the former Anambra State governor urged President Tinubu to step aside, claiming the country was moving in the wrong direction under his leadership.
Obi had described the current administration as one marked by “failure and renewed hopelessness,” arguing that Nigeria needed a different leadership approach to tackle its economic and governance challenges.
Responding in a statement on Monday, Arodiogbu said the Tinubu administration had already laid the groundwork for economic recovery and urged Nigerians to support the ongoing reforms instead of abandoning them for what he described as "another political experiment."
According to him, major policies such as the removal of fuel subsidy, exchange rate reforms and fiscal restructuring were introduced to reposition the economy for long-term and sustainable growth.
He acknowledged that the reforms had been difficult but maintained that they were beginning to produce positive results and should be strengthened rather than reversed.
"The priority for Nigeria should be the consolidation of ongoing economic gains, not the laying of a new foundation," he said.
Arodiogbu argued that Obi's call for a complete policy reset was not in the country's best interest at a time when Nigeria was undergoing critical economic adjustments.
He also accused the former Labour Party presidential candidate of frequently pointing out the country's problems without offering practical solutions that reflect current economic realities.
The APC chieftain maintained that Nigeria needed leadership focused on policy consistency, continuity and building on improvements in revenue generation and infrastructure development rather than political rhetoric.
He urged Nigerians to assess political leaders based on their performance in office, verifiable achievements and their ability to sustain economic progress.
Arodiogbu added that the South-East and other parts of the country would benefit more from the continued implementation of the current reforms than from abandoning the economic foundation already in place.
He further called on political leaders to put national interest ahead of partisan politics, stressing that investor confidence, job creation, infrastructure development and economic stability depend on consistent policies rather than sudden reversals.

Expressing confidence in the government's economic agenda, he said more Nigerians would begin to experience the benefits of the reforms as they mature through increased investment, higher productivity and expanded economic opportunities.
He reaffirmed the APC's position that Nigeria's path to sustainable development lies in strengthening existing reforms, improving policies where necessary and ensuring they deliver meaningful benefits to citizens ahead of the 2027 general elections.
