Former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has been released from the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja after spending 27 months in custody. This development follows a ruling by a Federal High Court in Abuja, granting Kyari a two-week bail to enable him to conclude the burial rites of his mother.
The court, which is handling a trial over drug-related charges filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), set May 31 for the determination of Kyari's bail application. Kyari was arrested over two years ago on February 14, 2022, in connection with the said charges.
Confirming Kyari's release, the spokesperson of the FCT Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Adamu Duza, stated that Kyari had met the conditions for his bail. He said, "DCP Kyari has perfected his bail conditions, and has since been released today."
Kyari's mother passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024, leaving behind 10 children, including Abba, who is the eldest son. Kyari's release is seen as a temporary reprieve to allow him to pay his final respects to his late mother before returning to court for the continuation of his trial.
