AbdulRazaq Inaugurates 83 Revitalised Primary Health Centres in Kwara

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has inaugurated 83 newly revitalised Primary Health Care (PHC) centres across the state, marking a major step toward improving access to quality healthcare for residents.

The governor performed a symbolic inauguration on Monday at the Oloje Primary Healthcare Centre in Ilorin. A statement issued on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, said the project was jointly funded by the Kwara State Government, the World Bank–supported IMPACT Project, the Basic Health Care Provision Fund, and Leadership Challenge Funds earned by the state.

Speaking at the event, AbdulRazaq said the revitalised facilities reflect his administration’s commitment to ensuring accessible and affordable healthcare for all Kwarans, regardless of location.

“With the unveiling of these 83 revitalised PHCs, we are opening a new chapter in the health history of our state. This is beyond fulfilling campaign promises; it is about building a strong foundation for a healthier and more prosperous Kwara,” the governor said.

He noted that the state inherited a poorly maintained primary healthcare system, which had serious consequences for citizens, but said the newly upgraded centres would now provide improved services such as antenatal care, safe deliveries, immunisation, reproductive health services, and care for the elderly closer to their communities.

According to him, the improvements already recorded in health outcomes have encouraged the government to do more through the recruitment of additional health workers and better welfare packages.

AbdulRazaq commended the World Bank, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, and the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency, led by Prof. Nusirat Elelu, for their roles in the success of the project.

Also speaking, the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Muyi Aina—represented by the IMPACT Project’s National Programme Manager, Amina Abdul-One Muhammed—praised Kwara for effectively using the IMPACT initiative to drive meaningful healthcare reforms. She disclosed that over 2,500 facilities across 31 states and the FCT have benefited from the programme and urged communities to protect the upgraded centres.

Prof. Elelu said Kwara had won the PHC Leadership Challenge Fund Award three consecutive times, earning over $1.4 million in incentives. She highlighted improvements in service delivery, including increased outpatient visits, higher numbers of safe deliveries, wider distribution of maternal supplements, and expanded coverage of child nutrition interventions.

“These figures represent real people whose lives and futures have been secured through improved healthcare services,” she said, while thanking the governor and the First Lady, Ambassador Olufolake AbdulRazaq, for their continued support for women and children.

On behalf of the Oloje community, Hon. Busari Jimoh expressed gratitude to the governor, noting that the upgraded facility would significantly improve healthcare access for residents.

The development comes shortly after the governor approved a 27.5 per cent Teachers Specific Allowance for educators in the state, following the presentation of the 2026 budget to the House of Assembly.
