Abia Lawmaker Ikwechegh Dumps APGA, Joins Labour Party

The member representing Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Alex Ikwechegh, has officially defected from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the Labour Party (LP).

Ikwechegh disclosed this on Tuesday after a closed-door meeting with Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, at the governor’s residence in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area. He said the visit was to formally inform the governor of his decision and to seek his blessings as the party’s national leader.

“I have received my Labour Party card as a new member,” Ikwechegh told journalists, confirming that he had resigned from APGA before making the move.

He also dismissed speculation that he had joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) following his recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu. According to him, he only attended an Iftar event hosted by the President and said it should not be misinterpreted as a defection.

“There have been speculations that after I met with the President, I joined the APC. This is not true,” he said, adding that politics is driven by interest and perspective.

Ikwechegh explained that his decision to align with the Labour Party was influenced by Governor Otti’s leadership style and what he described as visible transformation in Abia State. He said his political ideology aligns with that of the governor and expressed confidence in the party’s direction under leaders like Senator Nenadi Usman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha.

He encouraged residents and other Nigerians to register with the Labour Party, noting that an online registration link would soon be made available.

Also speaking, the member representing Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency and Leader of the Labour Party caucus in the National Assembly, Ginger Onwusibe, welcomed Ikwechegh into the party. He revealed that the lawmaker had resigned from APGA last week and had already been received by the LP caucus in Abuja before his formal presentation to Governor Otti.

Onwusibe described the defection as a major gain for the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. He likened it to a football club signing a talented player, saying the addition would strengthen the party’s team and boost its performance in future contests.

He expressed optimism that Ikwechegh would make meaningful contributions under the Labour Party platform, adding that the move reflects confidence in the party’s leadership and achievements in Abia State.
