Popular Nigerian activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has confirmed that musician and social media personality, Darlington Okoye, widely known as Speed Darlington or Akpi, is currently being detained by the Nigerian Police Force in Abuja. Adeyanju revealed that Speed Darlington was arrested in Lagos last Friday and subsequently transferred to Abuja, where he has remained in detention.
According to Adeyanju, the arrest stems from a formal complaint filed by Grammy Award-winning artist Burna Boy, though details of the petition remain undisclosed. Adeyanju shared this information via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating: "We just spent the last 30 minutes with Speed Darlington, and he narrated how he was arrested in Lagos last Friday, moved around, and eventually brought to Abuja, where he has been in detention since then. The petition against him was written by Burna Boy, we can confirm."
Prior to this confirmation, concerns had been raised about Speed Darlington’s whereabouts. Social media influencer Constance Nwogu raised the alarm, noting that the entertainer had been unreachable for three days. In a post on her Instagram page, Nwogu expressed worry over his sudden disappearance and pointed out the unusual gap in his social media activity.
Nwogu suggested that the arrest may be connected to a recent video in which Speed Darlington questioned the authenticity of Burna Boy’s Grammy award and allegedly made claims linking Burna Boy to embattled American musician Sean Combs, also known as P Diddy.
As of Tuesday, Burna Boy posted on X, "Who's missing?"—a cryptic message that has drawn attention but offered no further clarification. The police have yet to issue any official statement regarding Speed Darlington’s detention or the circumstances surrounding the arrest. Social media followers and concerned parties are urged to provide any information that could help in clarifying the situation.
