ADC Urges Tinubu to Match Swift Benin Intervention with Action on Nigeria’s Insecurity

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has commended the Federal Government for its rapid response to the failed coup in Benin Republic, while calling on President Bola Tinubu to demonstrate the same urgency in addressing Nigeria’s escalating insecurity.

In a statement on Monday by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the party highlighted that Nigeria acted decisively when pro-government forces in Benin, supported by Nigerian troops and air support, overpowered soldiers who had briefly seized the national television station and announced President Patrice Talon’s ouster.

While praising the swift action, the ADC questioned why similar decisiveness has not been applied to the domestic security crisis, pointing to ongoing banditry, terrorism, and violent crimes that continue to terrorize communities, displace families, and abduct children across Nigeria.

The party also stressed the need for consistency in foreign interventions and adherence to constitutional processes, noting that the National Assembly must ratify military deployments abroad. Abdullahi said, “If Nigeria could respond decisively to threats across our borders, why has our government demonstrated such outrageous incompetence in dealing with domestic insecurity? A government that can act swiftly abroad must also act decisively at home.”

The ADC further emphasised that safeguarding democracy requires not only defending constitutional order abroad but also improving governance, protecting citizens, and ensuring that opposing voices can thrive at home.

The statement concluded by urging the government to match its foreign policy efficiency with domestic security reforms to restore trust between the state and the people.
