Adeleke denies hiding Amotekun commander, blasts APC

Osun

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has dismissed allegations by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that he is harbouring the Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Omoyele, who is being wanted by the police over the killing of residents in Akinlalu community, Ife North Local Government Area.

The Osun APC, in a statement signed by its spokesperson Kola Olabisi on Sunday, accused Governor Adeleke of shielding Omoyele from arrest, calling the alleged action “condemnable, irresponsible, and unpatriotic.”

The party urged Adeleke to prove his commitment to justice by handing over the Amotekun boss to the police.

“If reports making the rounds in Osogbo are true — that Omoyele, one of the key suspects in the Akinlalu killings, is hiding in the Government House — then the governor must take responsibility,” the APC said.

“As a self-acclaimed believer in the rule of law, Governor Adeleke should immediately hand him over to the police for proper investigation into the killings that have become a national embarrassment.”

The APC noted that while the governor had earlier praised the police for their “diligent and professional” handling of the case, his alleged protection of Omoyele contradicted that stance. The party further accused Adeleke of having a “pattern of aiding impunity,” saying Omoyele’s case was similar to that of his former Chief Security Officer, who was also reportedly shielded after a police investigation.

Reacting through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke described the accusations as “baseless and politically motivated,” adding that the opposition was only seeking relevance.

“The Akinlalu matter is an issue of law and order. The Inspector-General of Police is already handling it, and our government will not interfere,” Rasheed said.

“We urge the public not to politicise this unfortunate incident. The APC’s claims are unfounded. They have become habitual spreaders of fake news in their desperation to distract the government from delivering good governance.”

The controversy follows the tragic events of September 30, 2025, when operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps allegedly stormed Akinlalu community, shooting several residents and killing three people.

Those confirmed dead were Ibrahim Oyebamiji (26), Sefiu Oyebamiji, and Abiola Olutayo, while others injured included Adeagbo Kadijat (22), Oke-Ila Oyebamiji (60), and Fayomi Toheeb (19).

The police confirmed that Amotekun operatives took the corpses of the deceased from the scene.

The Amotekun Corps, however, admitted to the killings but claimed that its men acted in self-defence after being ambushed by hoodlums while trying to recover two rifles earlier snatched from their operatives.

Following public outrage, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ordered a special investigation team from Abuja to take over the case. The team has since arrested five Amotekun officers linked to the operation, but the Corps Commander, Adekunle Omoyele, has yet to honour police invitations — a situation that fueled the APC’s latest accusations against the governor.

As the investigation continues, the incident has heightened political tension in Osun State, with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the APC trading accusations over what many have described as a needless and tragic loss of lives.
