AFCON Chaos: Senegal Stripped of Title, Morocco Crowned Amid Controversy

What began as a historic triumph for Senegal has spiralled into one of the most controversial episodes in African football history, after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stripped the team of their Africa Cup of Nations title nearly two months after their victory.

On January 18, 2026, Senegal defeated Morocco 1–0 in the final held in Rabat, sparking celebrations across the country as the Lions of Teranga lifted the trophy. But on March 17, CAF’s Appeals Board overturned the result, awarding a 3–0 win to Morocco and handing them the title instead.

The decision has triggered widespread outrage, with players, officials, and fans across the continent questioning the integrity of African football’s governing body.

What Led to the Decision

The controversy stems from chaotic scenes during the final. A disputed refereeing decision led to protests from the Senegalese bench, with coach Pape Thiaw briefly instructing his players to leave the pitch. Although the team later returned and completed the match—eventually winning—CAF ruled that the temporary walkout violated competition regulations.

Citing rules that penalise teams for refusing to continue play without approval, CAF concluded that Senegal had forfeited the match, leading to the reversal of the result.

Backlash from Senegal

The Senegalese Football Federation rejected the ruling, describing it as unfair and unprecedented. Officials confirmed plans to challenge the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, insisting that justice must be served.

Players also reacted strongly. Captain Sadio Mané, who had persuaded his teammates to return to the pitch during the match, criticised what he described as a culture of corruption in African football. Others, including Idrissa Gueye, maintained that the team’s achievement on the pitch could not be erased.

Political and Global Reactions

The controversy has gone beyond football, drawing political attention in Senegal, where government officials have called for an independent international investigation into CAF. Concerns have also been raised about possible conflicts of interest within the organisation’s leadership.

Across the football world, reactions have largely been critical. Former players and analysts have questioned both the timing and fairness of the decision, arguing that overturning a result long after the final whistle undermines the credibility of the competition.

A Divided Outcome

While Morocco has officially been declared champions, the reaction within the country has been more measured, with officials stating that their appeal was based purely on ensuring the rules were applied.

However, the broader football community remains deeply divided, with many insisting that titles should be decided on the pitch, not in boardrooms.

What Happens Next

Senegal is expected to take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, setting the stage for a legal battle that could further shape the outcome of the tournament.

For now, the AFCON controversy has left a cloud hanging over African football, raising difficult questions about governance, fairness, and the future credibility of the continent’s biggest sporting event.
