African Union Condemns Maiduguri Bombings, Pledges Support to Nigeria

The African Union has strongly condemned the suicide bombings that rocked Maiduguri, Borno State, on Monday night, leaving 23 people dead and more than 100 others injured.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Youssouf, described the attack as a tragic act of violence and extended condolences to the families of the victims, while wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.

He reaffirmed the Union’s solidarity with Nigeria, stressing that such acts of terrorism remain a serious threat to peace, security, and stability across the region.

Youssouf also reiterated the African Union’s firm rejection of all forms of violence carried out by terrorist groups, noting that attacks on civilians and security personnel are grave violations of human rights.

While commending the efforts of the Nigerian government and Borno State authorities in tackling insecurity, he pointed out that the incident highlights the continued threat posed by extremist groups and the need for sustained vigilance.

The AU further called on the international community to increase support for Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin region through humanitarian aid, intelligence sharing, capacity building, and long-term development initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of terrorism.

According to the Union, only a coordinated approach involving governments, communities, and global partners can effectively defeat terrorism and ensure lasting peace.

The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of the African Union’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in its efforts to achieve stability and security.
