The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended four suspected kidnappers who were disguised in military attire. According to a press release signed by the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, the suspects were arrested on Friday in Uyo following a distress call.
The suspects, identified as Abdulkarem Yusuf, Yusuf Waziri, Inbinabo Sunny Iboroma, and Abdulrahman Abbas, were arrested at Utang Street by Gibbs Street after allegedly kidnapping one Abraham Ekpe at Ring Road 3, opposite the cemetery. The kidnappers were apprehended while attempting to kidnap a second victim, identified as "Richie," a friend of Abraham Ekpe. Their plan was to transport their victims to the Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The police statement read: “The Command’s Anti-Robbery Squad immediately swung into action and mobilized to the scene where four suspects namely; Abdulkarem Yusuf ‘m’, Yusuf Waziri ‘m’, Inbinabo Sunny Iboroma ‘m’ and Abdulrahman Abbas ‘m’ were arrested. Further investigation revealed that they had demanded a ransom of five million naira from their victim but he could not pay, prompting them to also kidnap his friend."
The victims were successfully rescued and reunited with their families. The police recovered a red Honda Accord car with registration number BJ 615 ABC, a handcuff, and a dagger from the suspects. The statement further mentioned that the suspects would be charged to court upon the completion of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, CP Waheed Ayilara, reiterated the Command’s commitment to making Akwa Ibom State uninhabitable for criminals. He also urged the public to report any suspicious activities or movements to the police.
