ABUJA — The entire Enugu State caucus in the House of Representatives has officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, announced the defection on Thursday during plenary after reading letters of resignation submitted by the lawmakers, who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP).
The announcement was made in the presence of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who attended the session.
According to the defectors, their decision to leave their former parties stemmed from what they described as persistent internal crises and leadership struggles that have weakened the opposition.
Following the 2023 general elections, the Labour Party had won seven of Enugu’s eight House seats, while the PDP secured one. With this mass defection, the APC now controls all eight seats from Enugu State in the House of Representatives.
Speaking to journalists after the session, Nnolim Nnaji, representing Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency and spokesman for the defectors, said their decision was driven by a desire to align with Governor Mbah’s developmental agenda.
“Just come to Enugu and see what is happening there,” Nnaji said. “The governor is doing a lot for our people. We also want to bring our state to the centre.”
He described the move as a “bold step into the future,” saying it was about positioning Enugu to benefit from national development.
“For too long, our dear Enugu State has remained in opposition, watching from the sidelines as others shaped the destiny of our nation,” he said. “That era is over. We refuse to remain spectators when we can be key players in Nigeria’s progress.”

He added that joining the APC would open more opportunities for the state — including infrastructure projects, job creation, and youth empowerment.
Those who defected include Martins Oke, Anayo Onwuegbu, Nnamdi Agbo, Nnolim Nnaji, and Mark Obetta.
In a related move, Daniel Asama, who represents Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, also announced his defection from the Labour Party to the APC.
