The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in five of the six chairmanship seats contested in the 2026 Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections, leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with one seat.
Results announced on Sunday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed that the APC secured wins in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji, Bwari, Kwali, and Kuje, while the PDP clinched victory in Gwagwalada.
PDP Wins Gwagwalada
In Gwagwalada Area Council, PDP candidate Mohammed Kasim polled 22,165 votes to defeat the APC’s Yahaya Shehu, who garnered 17,788 votes.
Announcing the result, Returning Officer Philip Akpen declared Kasim the winner, having satisfied all legal requirements.
The breakdown of votes in Gwagwalada was as follows:
PDP – 22,165
APC – 17,788
APGA – 1,687
ADC – 1,366
APC Victories Across Five Councils
In Bwari, APC candidate Joshua Ishaku won with 18,466 votes, ahead of ADC’s 4,254 and ZLP’s 3,515 votes. Returning Officer Mohammed Nurudeen declared him elected.

Christopher Maikalangu of the APC was re-elected in AMAC after securing 40,295 votes. Other results showed ADC with 12,109 votes, PDP with 3,398, SDP with 2,185, and NNPP with 1,694.
In Abaji, APC’s Umar Abdullahi Abubakar won with 15,536 votes, defeating PDP’s 4,547 votes and ADC’s 37.
Similarly, in Kwali, the APC candidate Nuhu Daniel polled 17,032 votes to beat PDP’s Haruna Pai, who secured 8,575 votes.
In Kuje, APC’s Danjuma Shekwolo clinched victory with 17,269 votes, ahead of PDP’s 15,824 and APGA’s 4,305.
The results consolidate the APC’s dominance in the FCT Area Councils, winning five out of six chairmanship positions in the closely watched local elections.
