APC Slams ADC Over Criticism of Buhari’s State Burial, Calls Remarks “Spooky” and “Insensitive”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticized the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for accusing President Bola Tinubu’s administration of politicizing the state burial of late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The ADC had, in a statement released on Friday, described the state-organized burial as a political exploitation of a solemn national event. Responding on Saturday, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka condemned the opposition's statement, calling it “spooky, unconscionable” and a reflection of the ADC’s “duplicity and insensitivity.”

Morka said the ADC’s reaction revealed a deep misunderstanding of customary state practices and a lack of basic human empathy. “It has cut its own portrait as a party of mindless political dregs, a dump of Nigeria’s internally displaced politicians, ready to do or say anything in chase of attention but sinking itself deeper in quicksand of ignominy,” he remarked.

He further questioned what the ADC would have preferred President Tinubu to do—deny Buhari a state burial or withhold sympathy from the grieving former first family?

“It is unacceptable for the ADC to politicize a solemn moment of national grief, more so as its senseless statement was issued during the week of national mourning,” Morka added. “Describing the government's gestures in honour of the late president as 'exploitation' is beyond the pale.”

The APC hailed Buhari’s legacy as one of national service—both as a military leader and as Nigeria’s democratically elected president for two terms. The party emphasized the humanity of the late leader, highlighting the grief of his surviving family and the need for collective empathy.

“President Bola Tinubu demonstrated compassion and leadership during this difficult time, honouring a predecessor and political associate who gave so much to our dear nation,” the statement concluded.
