Army Confirms Suicide Bomber Behind Borno Mosque Explosion

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that the deadly explosion at a mosque in Borno State on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, was carried out by a suicide bomber.

The incident occurred at Al-Adum Jumaat Mosque in the Gamboru Market area of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council during the evening Maghrib prayers, causing panic and casualties among worshippers.

Providing an update on Thursday, the spokesman of Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed the attack was carried out by a suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber.

According to him, the attacker detonated an improvised explosive device inside the mosque, killing himself and two civilians on the spot.

He explained that troops of Operation Hadin Kai, working alongside the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, other security agencies, the Borno State Government and officials of the National Emergency Management Agency, swiftly moved to the scene. The area was immediately secured and cordoned off to prevent further danger and ensure public safety.

Lt. Col. Uba confirmed that victims were promptly evacuated to the General Hospital and the Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri for medical treatment.

He added that a total of 32 civilians sustained varying degrees of injuries, while two of the injured later died at the hospital. Two others are currently in critical condition, while the remaining victims are said to be stable and responding to treatment.

Reassuring residents, the Army spokesman said security has been further strengthened across Maiduguri and its environs, noting that troops and other security agencies have intensified surveillance to ensure the safety of residents throughout the festive period.
