Army Pursues Terror Group ‘Lakurawa’ as Crisis Deepens in Sokoto and Kebbi

Lakurawa
The Nigerian military is intensifying its pursuit of the terrorist group Lakurawa, which has reportedly operated from the Gongono Forest in Tangaza Local Government Area since 2018, according to enterprisetvnews.com. First flagged by the Department of State Services (DSS) in 2018, Lakurawa is alleged to have started as a group of jihadists from Algeria and Mali, invited by herdsmen to provide protection against bandits. Since then, the group has expanded, enforcing strict Islamic codes and establishing control over several communities across Sokoto and Kebbi.

Despite early signs, including violent clashes and local taxation imposed by the group, initial warnings went largely unheeded. Lakurawa’s foothold has now solidified, with its members reportedly joining forces with local bandits. Sani Alhaji Yakubu, a member of the National Assembly, highlighted the increasing threat, urging the military to deploy more resources to protect the region’s predominantly farming communities.

The Defence Headquarters recently issued an alert, linking Lakurawa to ISIS and confirming their strongholds in both Sokoto and Kebbi. Spokesperson Maj-Gen Edward Buba assured that operations are underway to dismantle the group’s presence in these areas, affirming that military action is focused on ending their destructive activities swiftly.
