The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed frustration over what it described as the Federal Government’s failure to act on long-standing issues affecting its members.
The union also outlined conditions for accepting the counteroffer to the 2009 agreement, which is currently being reviewed by a government committee led by Abel Enitan, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, had on Thursday disclosed that the committee was finalising a “clean proposal” to be presented to ASUU.
“We’ve decided on a counter-proposal to them. We now close by setting up a high-level technical team to clean up our proposal, come with a clean document,” Alausa said at a press briefing.
The 2009 agreement remains the last official pact between ASUU and the government, with the union insisting that it must be reviewed to reflect improved welfare for lecturers.

Reacting to the counteroffer, ASUU National President, Chris Piwuna, maintained that the union would only accept a concrete proposal that meets its demands.
“I truly hope they will come up with something tangible. Our members are tired of words and no action,” Piwuna told Sunday PUNCH.
