Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is yet to officially finalise his transition to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following his recent resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a close associate has disclosed.
According to the source, Atiku’s delay is intentional, as he plans to personally complete the registration process rather than delegate it to a representative. His recent travels have contributed to the postponement of the formal switch.
“He returned to Nigeria briefly for the burial of the late President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, after which he travelled back abroad for a scheduled two-week vacation,” the source told Vanguard in Abuja.
The source further explained that given Atiku’s political stature, his physical presence at the registration is crucial.
“For someone of His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s calibre, the symbolism of appearing in person to pick up his ADC membership card cannot be overstated. The optics matter, especially ahead of the 2027 elections,” the source noted.
It was also revealed that upon his return, Atiku is expected to make the move with significant media attention, as part of a carefully planned strategy to maximise political impact and reframe opposition dynamics in Nigeria.
Although a specific date for the registration is yet to be confirmed, insiders insist that Atiku’s defection to the ADC is imminent and could mark a pivotal shift in the political landscape as the country inches closer to another general election cycle.
