Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has publicly refuted claims that he is aspiring to become the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He also dismissed reports linking him to the suspension of top party leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Governors Nyesom Wike and Seyi Makinde.
In a post shared on X.com on Saturday, Fayose clarified that Ambassador Umar Damagum remains the party's acting chairman and that he has no interest in holding any political office, whether appointed or elective. He emphasized that reports failing to clearly identify him by name should be disregarded, as there are many individuals with the surname Fayose in Nigeria.
Fayose stated, “I dissociate myself from media reports linking me with any self-declaration as Chairman of the PDP and the suspension of prominent party leaders. I am Peter Ayodele Fayose and not aspiring to be the Chairman of the party.”
He further added that he is not involved in the internal crisis currently affecting the PDP, stressing, “Most importantly, I’m not part of the drama in the party and will never be.”
This follows a series of suspensions within the party, with a faction of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) suspending National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade and National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba for alleged disloyalty. In response, another faction suspended acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu for alleged anti-party activities.
However, the Federal High Court in Abuja has restrained the PDP’s National Executive Committee and Board of Trustees from removing Damagum, affirming his position as acting National Chairman until the party’s convention, scheduled for December next year.
