Bandits Attack Bilyaminu Usman Polytechnic Students’ Quarters in Jigawa
on Thursday night attacked the students’ quarters of Bilyaminu Usman Polytechnic (BUPOLY), Hadejia, along Malam Madori Road in Jigawa State.
The attackers reportedly assaulted several students, stole multiple mobile phones, and attempted — but failed — to abduct some students after victims raised alarm.
An eyewitness told PUNCH Online under anonymity: “It was around midnight when the attackers came. They caused chaos, injured some students, and took away many phones belonging to the students.”
Another witness, Tukur Danlami, said the loud screams of the students drew the attention of neighbours from nearby communities, forcing the assailants to flee.
Two students, Manniru Magaji and Yunusa Yaro, recounted their ordeal in separate interviews. While Magaji described seeing people “running away with phones in their hands,” Yaro said the attackers stormed their dormitory with weapons and carted away several phones before fleeing.
Confirming the incident, Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, said the attack occurred at an off-campus male hostel rented by students.
“The location is quite isolated, which made it vulnerable to the assault by the unknown armed men,” Adam explained. He noted that policemen responded swiftly to the distress call.
According to him, two students sustained injuries and were treated at Hadejia General Hospital before being discharged on Friday. He assured that investigations are ongoing and security has been reinforced around the polytechnic.
Community youth leader, Garba Ibrahim, condemned the attack and urged urgent government intervention.
“The people here are terrified. Such attacks disrupt peace and threaten the safety of our youth. We call on the government and security agencies to take urgent steps to protect students and residents alike,” he said.
Efforts to reach the management of Bilyaminu Usman Polytechnic for comment were unsuccessful at press time.
