Bandits Launch Night Attack on Kebbi Communities, Homes Razed

Suspected bandits have carried out a coordinated night attack on several communities in Kebbi State, leaving homes destroyed and an unknown number of casualties.

The attack occurred late on Sunday when armed men stormed villages including Gebe, Kawara, and Kalkami in Shanga Local Government Area. Residents said the attackers took advantage of the area’s wetland terrain to launch the assault.

Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen set houses on fire, forcing many residents to flee for safety. Kawara village was said to have been badly affected, with parts of Tungar Bori and nearby settlements also burnt.

Security sources believe the attackers came from hideouts in the Wawa Forest in neighbouring Niger State, an area known for bandit activity.

Confirming the incident on Monday, the Kebbi State Police Command described the attack as coordinated and assured that security forces had been deployed to the area.

Police spokesperson Bashir Usman said tactical units, alongside the military, marine police, and local vigilantes, had been mobilised to restore calm and protect lives.

He added that operations were ongoing to track down those responsible, while urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.

As of the time of this report, no official casualty figure had been released, though multiple deaths and injuries are feared.

The attack has once again highlighted the growing insecurity in border communities between Kebbi and Niger states, where residents continue to face repeated violence and displacement.
