The Bauchi chapter of the Retired Police Officers Association of Nigeria (REPON) has revealed that over 500 of its members have passed away while fighting for their retirement benefits. The association expressed frustration over the delay of a bill, submitted in 2012, aimed at establishing a police pension board.
During a press conference, retired ASP John Iliya, the chapter’s Secretary, voiced the group's disappointment with unmet promises. He recalled a protest at the National Assembly in May 2024, where lawmakers assured their demands would be addressed by September, but no progress has been made as of October.

Iliya warned that if their grievances, including the removal of the Nigeria Police Force from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), remain unresolved, REPON will organize another protest. The association seeks an independent Police Pension Board to better manage police retirees’ pensions.
REPON also criticized the swift passage of a bill extending the Inspector General of Police’s tenure, contrasting it with the neglect of their pension bill. They urged the National Assembly to act swiftly to avoid further protests.
