Benin Arrests Soldiers After Foiled Coup Attempt

Security forces in Benin have arrested about a dozen soldiers linked to an attempted coup, according to military and security sources on Sunday.

One source confirmed that 13 people were taken into custody, while another clarified that all but one of the detainees are serving soldiers, with the remaining suspect being a former military officer.

The arrests came after a dramatic broadcast on national television earlier on Sunday, during which a group of military officers claimed they had removed President Patrice Talon from office and dissolved all state institutions.
The officers, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, announced they had seized power.

However, the presidency quickly dismissed the claim and assured the public that President Talon is safe. Loyalist forces have since moved to restore order across the country.

The government described the incident as the action of “a small group” with limited reach.

According to officials, “The regular army is regaining control. The city and the country are completely secure.”
