Benue State: Gwer West Indigenes Block Road in Protest Against Killings

Benue

Indigenes of Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State took to the streets to protest the recent killings in their communities, blocking the Makurdi-Naka road. The protests were in response to the deaths of 26 people, including security personnel, in attacks by suspected herdsmen over the course of three days.

Local Government Area Chairman Henry Agba confirmed the attacks, which began on Saturday and lasted till Monday, leading to widespread devastation and loss of lives. The protesters accused the state government of failing to implement the Anti-Open Grazing Law, which they believe would have prevented such attacks.

Despite the Deputy Governor's announcement of the full enforcement of the anti-open grazing law earlier in March, the residents feel that more needs to be done to protect them from armed herders. The protesters called on both the Federal and State Governments to take decisive action to ensure the safety of the people.

Former local government chairman Francis Ayagah and protester Titus Numzua highlighted the insecurity caused by the influx of herdsmen in the area. They called on the government to provide logistical support to security agencies and enforce laws prohibiting open grazing to restore peace to Gwer West.

Senator Titus Zam and Member of the House of Representatives Asema Achado also condemned the attacks and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. They echoed the calls for stricter enforcement of anti-open grazing laws to prevent further bloodshed.
