Catholic Diocese Condemns Abduction at Niger School, Calls for Calm and Prayers

The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has strongly condemned the attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, where armed men abducted students, teachers, and a security guard in the early hours of Friday.

In a statement signed by the Diocesan Secretary, Rev. Fr. Jatau Joseph, the Diocese said the attackers stormed the school between 1:00 am and 3:00 am. During the invasion, a security personnel was shot, and several pupils, students, and staff members were taken away.

“The incident caused fear and distress within the school community,” the statement read.

The Diocese expressed deep concern for the safety of those kidnapped and confirmed that security agencies were immediately notified. According to the statement, joint rescue efforts are already underway.

The Bishop assured the public that the Diocese is working closely with security operatives, local leaders, and government authorities to ensure the victims’ safe return.

The Diocese urged residents to remain calm, support ongoing rescue operations, and continue to pray for the quick release of the abducted children and staff. It reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding children and promised to share verified updates as they become available.

“May the Lord grant quick release to those abducted and continue to protect His people from all danger,” the Diocese added.

This latest incident comes just days after a similar attack in Maga, Kebbi State, where 25 students were abducted. In Kwara State, over 50 schools were shut down on Thursday following rising insecurity.

President Bola Tinubu has cancelled his planned trips to South Africa and Angola to coordinate the government’s response to the escalating situation.
