China Says Iran’s Choice of New Supreme Leader Is Internal Matter

China has said that Iran’s decision to appoint a new supreme leader is an internal issue and warned against attempts to target the country’s new leader.

Iran recently named Mojtaba Khamenei as its supreme leader following the killing of his father, Ali Khamenei. The elder Khamenei was killed more than a week ago during the first wave of strikes carried out by Israel and the United States against Iran.

Israel’s military has since warned that any successor to the former leader could also become a target.

Responding to questions about the development, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, said Iran’s decision to appoint the younger Khamenei was made in accordance with the country’s constitution.

He stressed that China opposes interference in the internal affairs of other nations.

According to him, Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity should be respected.

Meanwhile, tensions in the region remain high as Israel and the United States continue their strikes on Iran, while Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks on Israel and several Gulf countries hosting American military forces.
