At least seven people have died, and 71 others have been hospitalized following a cholera outbreak in the Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) disclosed this in a statement shared on its X.com page, linking the outbreak to a recent flood that contaminated local water sources. Over 100 people are currently under observation.

The affected communities include Alkalawa, Doubeli, Rumde, and Gwadabawa. NEMA confirmed that due to overcrowding at the isolation center, some patients have been transferred to the Federal Medical Centre for further treatment.

In response, NEMA and the Adamawa State government have initiated emergency measures, including chlorination of toilets and water treatment to curb the spread of the infection. They have also launched community education campaigns to raise awareness about cholera prevention.

This outbreak adds to the rising cholera cases in Nigeria, with over 1,500 suspected cases and 53 deaths reported earlier this year, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC). The Federal Government has activated the National Emergency Operation Centre for cholera to address the ongoing crisis.
