Cholera Outbreak Confirmed in Akwa Ibom’s Eastern Obolo Community

The Akwa Ibom State Government has confirmed a cholera outbreak in Emeroke community, Eastern Obolo Local Government Area. Dr. Patrick Essiet, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, announced that the State Epidemiologist has been deployed to the area to launch awareness campaigns and curb the spread of the disease.

Residents have been advised to practice proper handwashing, especially after using the toilet, and boil drinking water before consumption. Dr. Essiet emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention for symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting while urging community leaders to enforce the ban on open defecation. Short-term relief supplies are also being mobilized to assist the affected community.

Samuel Nteogwuijah, Chairman of Eastern Obolo Local Government Council, has assured residents of a collaborative effort to address the crisis. During a visit to Emmanuel General Hospital in Eket on Sunday, he reaffirmed plans to work with the state government and health agencies to prevent further spread. Nteogwuijah thanked Governor Umo Eno for promptly directing health officials to provide immediate support.

Health officials have begun assessing cases at secondary health facilities, with ongoing efforts to contain the outbreak. Authorities remain committed to delivering both immediate relief and long-term solutions to ensure the well-being of residents in the affected areas.
