A cholera outbreak sweeping across Nigeria has claimed at least 37 lives, affecting 30 states, including Lagos and Ogun. Lagos State reported an additional six deaths, bringing its toll to 21 with 401 cases, according to Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health. Ogun State also reported one new death and 14 cases, with five individuals hospitalized.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reported over 1,141 suspected and 65 confirmed cholera cases between January 1 and June 11, 2024, from 96 local government areas. The outbreak's spread is concerning, particularly following large gatherings during recent Sallah festivities, which officials believe contributed to the rise in cases.

Federal and state health officials are intensifying efforts to control the outbreak. The Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation has initiated water quality analyses in affected areas, while emergency meetings were held by the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the International Organization for Migration. Lagos has ramped up its public health interventions, focusing on surveillance, monitoring, and public education on hygiene practices.

In addition to governmental efforts, non-governmental organizations like Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) are urging authorities to address the underlying causes of the outbreak, such as inadequate sanitation and water supply. State governments, including those in Cross River and Osun, are heightening community sensitization to prevent further spread and ensure prompt treatment of symptoms.
