Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Olukayode Ariwoola has cautioned judicial officers to resist public opinions, emotions, and sentiments while performing their duties. Speaking at a two-day workshop in Abuja organized by the Court of Appeal to review last year's election petition tribunals and appeals, Ariwoola emphasized that no amount of threat or intimidation should cause a judge to deviate from the law.

Justice Ariwoola highlighted the intense scrutiny and pressure associated with political matters, noting that the strict timelines mandated by electoral laws add to the judiciary's challenges. He stressed that judicial officers must remain steadfast and not succumb to public sentiments or emotions, which are often misplaced. Ariwoola also warned against the abuse of discretionary powers and urged judges to be guided by their conscience to ensure justice.

Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Justice Minister Lateef Fagbemi praised the judiciary for its role in stabilizing the nation's electoral process. He commended the Court of Appeal for its pivotal role in shaping and strengthening electoral jurisprudence through its constitutional mandate. Fagbemi acknowledged the court's crucial contribution to upholding democratic principles.

President of the Court of Appeal (PCA), Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, revealed that 99 panels, each comprising three judges, handled litigations arising from last year’s general elections, which significantly strained the judicial system. She described the election litigation season as extremely challenging due to the volume of cases filed. Dongban-Mensem commended the judicial officers for their diligent work and called for amendments to the Constitution and the Electoral Act to improve the electoral system. She identified specific sections of the Constitution and the Electoral Act that need revision for better legal clarity and effectiveness.
