The Federal Government faces allegations from the opposition over the alleged diversion of N234bn earmarked for the aborted 2023 national census, with claims that the funds were used to influence the general elections. Under former President Muhammadu Buhari, N224bn was disbursed for the census, originally scheduled for May 2023, alongside an earlier N10bn for preliminary demarcations. However, 17 months into President Bola Tinubu’s administration, no new date for the exercise has been announced.
Labour Party National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, accused the ruling APC of misusing the funds, asserting that the money was intended to sway the elections in their favor. He criticized the lack of accountability, stating, "If the money hasn’t been used or returned to the Central Bank, where is it? Security agencies must investigate and demand accountability."
In response, APC Deputy National Organising Secretary, Nze Duru, dismissed the claims, emphasizing that the census remains a critical national project. He assured Nigerians that preparations are ongoing and highlighted the importance of population data for governance, resource allocation, and economic planning.
The debate underscores concerns over Nigeria’s irregular census schedule, often delayed for decades. Critics argue that accurate, up-to-date population data is vital for effective governance and must not be politicized or mismanaged.
