The average retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, surged by 44.51% year-on-year in July 2025, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
In its latest LPG Price Watch Report released Tuesday, NBS revealed that the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder jumped from ₦14,261.57 in July 2024 to ₦20,609.48 in July 2025, highlighting a steep rise in household energy expenses.
The increase marks a reversal from July 2024, when cooking gas prices recorded a 9.37% month-on-month drop. Despite government interventions — including the suspension of gas exports in October 2024 to boost local supply — prices have remained stubbornly high.
The July 2025 report, however, showed a slight month-on-month decline of 1.91%, as the average price fell from ₦21,010.56 in June to ₦20,609.48 in July. Experts warn that this modest dip may not translate into sustained relief for households.
For smaller cylinders, the 5kg refill price dropped marginally by 0.96% month-on-month, from ₦8,323.95 in June 2025 to ₦8,243.79 in July 2025. On a year-on-year basis, though, the price surged by 37.98%, up from ₦5,974.55 in July 2024.
