A Federal High Court in Abuja has declared Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, former Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, innocent of murder allegations leveled against him by the Kano State Government. The judgement, dated December 5, 2023, and released in suit No: FHC/ABJ/ABJ/CS/714/2019, was delivered by Judge D.U. Okorowo, who cleared Doguwa of all charges.
The court also ordered the Kano State Government to pay Doguwa N25 million in damages. Doguwa, who serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on Downstream Petroleum and represents the Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency in Kano State, was accused by the NNPP government of murder. However, the court ruled that Doguwa was wrongly accused and unjustly treated.
Doguwa was previously arrested and arraigned by the Kano police over the murder allegations but was later released on bail. He then sought a review of the police investigations that led to his arrest and detention. The previous APC administration in Kano had exonerated him after dropping the investigation.
The murder case was reopened by the NNPP administration, which accused Doguwa of killing over 15 people, mostly NNPP members. In response, Doguwa sued the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Inspector-General of Police, the Governor of Kano State, and the Attorney-General of Kano State for alleged infringement of his rights to dignity, liberty, and freedom of movement.
