The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Elvert Anyambem, has been impeached by his colleagues over allegations of gross misconduct and administrative high-handedness. The impeachment reportedly took place in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to Vanguard, the move to remove Anyambem had been brewing for months, with members expressing discontent over his conduct and management style. Prior to his impeachment, over 20 members had reportedly signed up for his removal.
The motion for his impeachment was moved by Hon. Effiong Ekarika, representing Calabar South 1, and seconded by Charles Omang. Following the impeachment, the mace, a symbol of authority in the House, was taken away by the members.
