Dangote Refinery denies importing high-sulphur petrol

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has denied claims that it imported petrol with high sulphur content into Nigeria, calling the report false and misleading.

The clarification came after an online news platform, Sahara Reporters, alleged that the refinery brought in high-sulphur petrol from the United Kingdom aboard the vessel MT Clearocean Mary. The report claimed the ship was carrying about 37,000 metric tonnes of petrol with a sulphur content of 690 parts per million and was expected to arrive at the refinery’s offshore facility on October 9.

In a statement issued on Friday, Dangote Refinery explained that the shipment in question was not petrol but an intermediate feedstock — a raw material used in refining to produce high-quality fuel.

“The cargo in question is an intermediate feedstock, not finished petrol,” the statement read. “This feedstock will be refined in our processing units to meet both Nigerian and international quality standards.”

The refinery, which operates within a Free Trade Zone, emphasized that it only produces and sells fuels that comply with all regulatory standards. It also noted that its exports go to markets in the United States and Europe.

According to the company, all imported feedstocks come with verified quality certificates that are shared with regulators.

“We are also ready to make these documents public to ensure full transparency and accountability,” it added.

Dangote Refinery reaffirmed its commitment to promoting Nigeria’s energy independence, upholding global best practices, and delivering cleaner, high-quality fuels for both local and international markets.
