At least five individuals were reportedly killed and several others injured in a shootout between security forces and gunmen in Anambra on Tuesday. The confrontation occurred when the Anambra Joint Security Force (JSF) conducted operations at two gunman camps in Aguluezechukwu, Aguata council area, and Ogboji, Orumba South council area.
During the security raid, several items including a locally fabricated rocket launcher, charms, and police uniforms were seized from the gunmen. Although Anambra police spokesman Ikenga Tochukwu did not specify the exact number of casualties, it was gathered that four gunmen and one police operative lost their lives in the exchange of fire.
According to a source, the affected areas resembled a war zone during the confrontation, with bullets flying and creating a sense of fear and apprehension among residents. This incident follows a recent attack in Awgbu, Orumba North local government area, where two policemen were killed and another police station was assaulted by hoodlums.
In response to the escalating violence, the Anambra Police Command announced on Wednesday that the hunt for the gunmen has been expanded to include the Obofia Forest, Aguluezechukwu, and Ogboji areas.
