Dollar to Naira exchange rate today, December 17, 2025

The Nigerian naira remained active across the foreign exchange market on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, with movements recorded in both the official and parallel segments as the year approaches its end.

At the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), the naira weakened slightly against the US dollar compared to the previous day’s close. Trading data showed the dollar exchanging at an average of ₦1,453.67, after touching a high of about ₦1,454.97 earlier in the day. Analysts link the pressure to increased demand from businesses settling import bills and other end-of-year financial commitments ahead of the holidays.

In the parallel market, rates remained higher but relatively stable. Dealers in major cities such as Lagos, Abuja and Kano were buying dollars at around ₦1,475 and selling at about ₦1,485. Although the gap between official and street rates has narrowed in recent weeks, it continues to affect small importers and individual travellers.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has continued efforts to supply liquidity in the official market to limit sharp fluctuations. Market watchers say these interventions have helped cushion the naira, even as movements in global oil prices place pressure on the country’s foreign reserves.

Other major currencies also showed firm positions. The British pound traded at roughly ₦1,943 in the official market, while the euro exchanged at about ₦1,707. In the parallel market, both currencies attracted higher rates, with the pound approaching the ₦2,000 mark in some

locations.
