Easter: DHQ orders troop alert, confirms US support

The Defence Headquarters has placed troops across the country on high alert ahead of the Easter celebrations, assuring Nigerians that security will be tightened during the period.

Speaking at the end-of-month briefing in Abuja, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, said the military had already activated measures to prevent any security breach. He noted that similar steps were taken during previous festive periods like Christmas and Eid-el-Fitr, and this year would be no different.

According to him, security agencies remain fully alert, especially as such periods can be targeted by hostile groups.

“Festive periods usually come with heightened security concerns, so our personnel have been directed to stay vigilant. We are not relaxing. Nigerians should feel safe this Easter,” he said.

Onoja added that the military is aware that threats often increase during celebrations, stressing that troops would remain proactive throughout the holiday.

He also spoke on the ongoing collaboration with the United States, describing it as a boost to Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts. While the results may not be immediate, he expressed confidence that the impact would become visible in the coming weeks.

He explained that the support from the U.S. includes intelligence sharing and training, which are critical to ongoing operations.

“These kinds of operations take time, but the support we are getting—especially in intelligence and training—is significant. In the coming weeks or months, Nigerians will begin to see the results,” he said.

Earlier this year, about 100 U.S. military personnel arrived in Nigeria to provide technical assistance and advisory support. Although they are not involved in combat, their presence is expected to strengthen the country’s fight against insecurity.

Despite this, concerns remain as insecurity continues to affect parts of the country. However, the military insists that ongoing efforts and international support will gradually improve the situation.
