The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has dismissed as "unfounded" the terrorism allegations made by Niger Republic against Nigeria and other member states, reaffirming its support for its members.
Niger’s military leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, had accused Nigeria and ECOWAS of collaborating with France to destabilize his country. Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, categorically denied the claims, calling them baseless and imaginary.
“Nigeria has never engaged in any alliance, overt or covert, with France—or any other country—to destabilize Niger Republic,” Idris stated on Thursday.
In its response, ECOWAS emphasized Nigeria’s longstanding commitment to regional peace and security, highlighting the country’s leadership of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) as evidence of its dedication.
“The recent successes recorded by the MNJTF demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to peace and security across the region,” the ECOWAS statement read. “The Commission stands firmly by Nigeria and ECOWAS member states against allegations that they are sponsoring terrorism.”
ECOWAS called on all member states to prioritize dialogue and stability while avoiding baseless accusations that could undermine regional harmony.
The allegations come amidst strained relations between ECOWAS and Niger following a coup in the latter, which has heightened regional tensions. ECOWAS has maintained its stance on restoring democratic governance in Niger while advocating for peaceful solutions.
