The Office of the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has refuted claims by the state House of Assembly that an impeachment notice was served on Shaibu. The lawmakers had alleged that Shaibu was evading service, leading to the decision to publish the impeachment notice in a daily newspaper.
Last Wednesday, the state Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against Shaibu, accusing him of perjury and leaking government secrets. The move is believed to be the latest development in the ongoing rift between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki.
In response, Shaibu's office denied the claim by the Assembly, stating that no impeachment notice was ever served on the Deputy Governor. The office explained that Shaibu had been out of Benin since March 3, 2024, and had not been served with any notice.
Meanwhile, Catholic Lawyers and six other groups in the Catholic Church have joined calls for the Assembly to drop the impeachment proceedings against Shaibu. In a joint letter presented to the House Speaker, the groups described the impeachment move as disrespectful and urged for a peaceful resolution ahead of the September 21 governorship election.
