Edo Govt Supports Families of Fallen Civil Servants with ₦200m Benefits and Scholarships

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has provided financial support and scholarships to 47 families of civil servants who died while in active service. The presentation took place on Thursday at the Government House in Benin City.

The support — given under the state’s Group Life Insurance Scheme — included more than ₦200 million in insurance payouts, along with scholarships for one member of each family. The initiative was carried out in partnership with Tangerine Life Insurance.

Governor Okpebholo said the gesture was rooted in compassion and a sense of responsibility to families who lost their loved ones while serving the state.

He said, “This is not just about insurance; it is about goodness. We want you to receive your entitlements because of the painful loss you have suffered. And today, we are also giving scholarships to ensure you are not left behind.”

He praised Tangerine Life Insurance for its efficiency, noting that Edo State has become one of Nigeria’s leading examples in pension and insurance reforms.

Kehinde Borisade, Managing Director of Tangerine Life, also commended the governor for his commitment to workers’ welfare, stating that Edo has become “a model state in implementing pension and insurance reforms.”

Since assuming office, Governor Okpebholo has made workers’ welfare a priority. His administration has increased the minimum wage, absorbed over 5,000 contract teachers into the civil service, and regularised cleaners who were previously earning very low wages.

The event further highlighted the government’s commitment to compassionate leadership and strengthening social support systems across Edo State.
