The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Wale Akinterinwa, an All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Ondo State, in connection with an investigation into his tenure as Commissioner for Finance in the defunct Akeredolu administration. Akinterinwa served as commissioner for over seven years until the State Executive Council was dissolved by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who succeeded the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
Sources indicate that Akinterinwa is being investigated for alleged mismanagement of billions of Naira during his tenure. Despite being detained, he participated in the weekend direct primary. The EFCC stated that the timing of the detention was at its discretion.
Akinterinwa had been invited by the EFCC some weeks ago for questioning but reportedly did not honour the invitation due to being "too busy." He eventually showed up at the anti-graft commission's office last Thursday. The EFCC chose to keep the detention quiet to avoid impacting Akinterinwa's chances in the APC primary.
A source within the EFCC stated that Akinterinwa voluntarily reported to their office and was taken into custody for questioning. The source emphasized that the detention was not politically motivated but rather a result of the ongoing investigation into his activities as Commissioner for Finance.
