EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed frustration over the failure of ex-Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello to appear for trial regarding an alleged N80.2 billion fraud case. Effa Okim, the acting Zonal Director of EFCC's Benin Zonal Command, made these remarks during a visit to the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Asaba.

Okim stated that despite declaring Bello wanted and placing him on a watchlist, the EFCC had been unable to arrest him due to alleged protection within the system. He expressed dismay over the lack of accountability and the perceived shielding of Bello by influential figures.

Responding to questions about the EFCC's inability to apprehend Bello, Okim emphasized the collective shame on Nigeria, suggesting that Bello, a politically exposed person accused of serious financial misconduct, should be held accountable like others who faced similar allegations. He questioned why influential figures, including ministers and Bello's colleagues, were not exerting pressure on him to cooperate with the EFCC.

Okim stressed the moral dimension of the case, lamenting that morality seemed to have been sidelined in favor of legal technicalities. He called for a unified stance from the media to critique Bello's actions and demand his compliance with the EFCC's summons.

In conclusion, Okim highlighted that Bello's defiance was undermining the criminal justice system's integrity and called for concerted efforts to restore accountability and uphold the rule of law. The Chairman of the NUJ Delta State Council, Churchill Oyowe, pledged journalists' support to the EFCC's efforts in combating corruption and promoting transparency in governance.
