The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that Simon Ekpa, an associate of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, will soon be brought back to Nigeria for prosecution in connection with the pro-Biafra agitation.
During proceedings in Kanu’s ongoing trial, an official of the Department of State Services (DSS) testified that Ekpa, known for his support of Kanu’s movement, is being investigated for his involvement in the agitation. The witness, referred to as PWAAA, added that Ekpa is currently outside Nigeria, and plans are underway to bring him to face trial.
The witness, cross-examined by Kanu's lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN), explained that Ekpa’s involvement was not limited to being an associate but that he actively supported Kanu’s pro-Biafra activities. However, when questioned about the specifics of other individuals tied to the movement, the witness admitted having limited knowledge beyond Kanu himself, referencing news reports about supporters.
During the trial, the witness also elaborated on Kanu’s previous arrest in 2015, where various personal items were seized from his hotel room, though no weapons or materials related to terrorism were recovered. These items were later presented in court and admitted as evidence.
Among the items recovered were multiple electronics, including laptops, modems, phones, and various personal accessories. The witness confirmed that while the items were not necessarily offensive, the context of their use in Kanu’s activities remained unclear.
The court proceedings will continue on May 6, 7, and 8 as Justice James Omotosho schedules further hearings. The ongoing case remains a key part of the broader investigation into pro-Biafra activities in Nigeria.
