The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is resolute in its decision to prosecute former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello for alleged financial misconduct, including the use of $720,000 of state funds for his child's tuition. EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, emphasized the commission's commitment to upholding the rule of law and stated that Bello is not immune to prosecution.
Bello, on the other hand, has protested against what he perceives as harassment by the EFCC, urging the agency to follow due process. He rejected the EFCC's offer to suspend the execution of an arrest warrant issued against him, insisting that he would appear in court on his own accord.
Olukoyede clarified that the EFCC's actions have not violated any court orders and highlighted the agency's efforts to engage with Bello in a lawful manner. He emphasized the importance of accountability, especially regarding the alleged misuse of public funds for personal purposes.
The EFCC chairman also addressed the investigation into suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Dr. Betta Edu, stating that over 15 senior staff members have been linked to misconduct in the ministry. He emphasized that the probe is not about individuals but about ensuring accountability within the system.
Olukoyede called on Nigerians to support the EFCC's anti-corruption efforts, emphasizing the need for transparency and adherence to the rule of law. He assured that those implicated in obstructing the arrest of Bello will be prosecuted, emphasizing that no one is above the law.
The EFCC's ongoing actions underscore its commitment to combatting corruption and ensuring accountability at all levels. The outcome of these efforts will depend on continued adherence to due process and the rule of law, as well as the support of all stakeholders in the fight against corruption.
