At least eight individuals were injured on Friday when a commercial bus, popularly known as a Molue, crashed into the road median at the Ahmadiya axis of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, revealed that the accident occurred as the driver veered off the road to avoid pedestrians at the bus stop, leading to a loss of control and the vehicle overturning.
Taofiq explained that the accident was caused by excessive speed and driver impatience. In an attempt to avoid colliding with another commercial bus and pedestrians, the driver sharply swerved, causing the vehicle, with registration KTU 801 XM, to overturn. Among the injured were five men, three women, and the bus driver, who sustained a fractured arm.
The swift response of LASTMA personnel and Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) ensured all victims were promptly rescued and transported to Ile-Epo General Hospital for treatment. LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy for the injured and commended the timely intervention of the emergency services.
Bakare-Oki also emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic regulations, including speed limits and regular vehicle maintenance, to prevent avoidable accidents. He urged motorists to prioritize safety, stressing that lives depend on responsible driving practices.
