The Ekiti State government has eradicated a large hemp farm spanning over 20 hectares in the Ise-Ekiti Forest Reserves, located in the Ise/Orun Local Government Area. The plantation, along with its nursery, was destroyed and burnt by the Ekiti State Forestry Commission Task Force.
Sunday Adekunle, the Executive Secretary of the commission, revealed that the plantation was discovered following a tip-off from newly recruited boundary officials. He noted that the area had been transformed into a haven for kidnappers, causing distress to citizens and travelers. Adekunle highlighted the government's commitment to ensuring the security of its people and pledged the Commission's determination to eliminate criminal elements from all the state's reserves.
Furthermore, Adekunle stated that the Commission is working to engage farmers in agro-forestry practices on such lands. This initiative includes the planting of tree seedlings currently being cultivated at the Commission's Central Nursery in Erifun, Ado-Ekiti.
