The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has instructed eleven electricity distribution companies to refund customers who were wrongly billed at the new rate. They have until April 11, 2024, to complete the refunds through energy tokens and provide evidence of compliance by April 12. NERC also directed the companies to ensure clarity for affected customers and implement updates, including maintaining only approved Band A feeders for vending and billing and posting schedules of affected feeders on their websites.
Meanwhile, Senator Ali Ndume, the Chief Whip of the Senate, has criticized the recent hike in electricity tariff, describing the timing as inappropriate. Ndume, who represents Borno South, emphasized that Nigerians are still reeling from the removal of fuel subsidy and facing various challenges, including inflation and insecurity. He urged the Federal Government to focus on providing stable electricity, reducing inflation, stabilizing the naira, and lowering food prices before increasing tariffs.
Ndume expressed concern over the lack of consultation with the National Assembly regarding the tariff hike. He highlighted the need for lawmakers to intervene and reverse the increase, noting that constituents are also calling for action. Various stakeholders, including labor unions and religious leaders, have rejected the tariff hike, warning of its adverse effects.
Ndume stressed that the government should prioritize improving the purchasing power of Nigerians and providing basic amenities before imposing additional financial burdens. He urged the Federal Government to reconsider the tariff hike and engage in consultations with the National Assembly and other stakeholders to address the concerns of the people.
