The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Organising Committee has called for the immediate dismissal of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following the killing of protesters during ongoing demonstrations. The demand was made at a candlelight symposium held in honor of the victims at the Rights House in Ikeja, Lagos State, on Friday.
The committee, headquartered at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, Lagos, had previously declared three days of mourning for those killed nationwide. Their ongoing hunger strike, now in its ninth day, was launched as a form of protest against the government's handling of the situation.
Amnesty International has reported that at least 21 protesters have been killed by Nigerian security forces over the past week during demonstrations against economic hardships. Speaking at the symposium, Comrade Hassan Taiwo, National Spokesperson of the Youth Rights Campaign, stressed the urgency of removing the IGP, citing the loss of more than 40 lives nationwide.
Following the symposium, the CDHR candlelight procession is set to begin in Alausa, continuing the group's efforts to honor the victims and demand accountability from the government.
